Learn to play five songs from American rock band Journey. Between 1980 and 1986 the band were at the height of their popularity after releasing their biggest selling studio albums, Escape and Frontiers. We've chosen five classic songs from that golden period which showcase guitarist Neal Schon's range of technique and songwriting prowess. From the Thin Lizzy influenced guitar-voice rhyme scheme arrangements of 'Any Way You Want It' and 'Stone In Love' to the heavy R&B sound of 'Separate Ways' the aspect of Schon's guitar style that always shines through is his highly lyrical guitar work.
Although his playing typically features flowing and impeccably judged melodic lines, juxtaposed with blistering aggression Schon is way too commercial to be classed as a Fusion player and too well-schooled to be labelled a pure rocker (Wes Montgomery was an early influence). Probably the closest comparison is Steve Lukather, another American guitarist whose bluesy roots and Pop sensibilities are harnessed to a solid Rock foundation.
Of course, no learn to play Journey DVD would be complete without 'Don't Stop Believin', a song so enshrined in popular culture now that you'd struggle to find someone
who doesn't recognise Neal Schon's melodic staccato 16th notes lick which accelerates into a crescendo of speed and energy.
As well as learning these five classic Journey songs, this DVD will help give you a better understanding of pop/rock song construction and the ways
in which melodic guitar playing can be coupled with speed and advanced guitar techniques.
The five songs included in the DVD are:
Don't Stop Believin'
Anyway You Want It
Stone In Love
Mother Father
Separate Ways
