This book/CD is designed to show you the essential techniques for acoustic guitar playing. While it serves as an excellent source for the beginning guitarist, it can help players of all levels widen their skills with techniques such as fingerstyle playing, Travis and bluegrass-style picking, alternate and open tunings and new chord sounds.
The examples in the book are varies: some can be played with a flatpick, and others are intended to be played fingerstyle. Some examples may be played in either fashion. Experiment and see what sounds best for you! Most examples are written both in music notation and guitar tab and can be heard on the accompanying CD.
Topics covered include:
- basic chords and rhythms;
- chord embellishments;
- fingerpicking patterns;
- blues, ragtime, new age, folk and other styles;
- drop D and other alternate tunings;
- and more!
This book is as titled; probably not a beginners book but might be the perfect book if you know some chords and strums, but have not had a clear direction or teacher.
The book moves fast, lesson one covers open chords, with basic rhythms and even base runs. Chapter two, strumming variations, with more base runs and connecting notes; chapter three offers chord embellishments (love those open sus 4th and add 9th), arpeggiation, and the song "Cloudy" is simple and sweet. This book does not offer all the old tunes that are in the other books (the ones we learned as toddlers). Chapter four, beginning finger picking.
