Owlet is a standalone, unbiased, physically-based raytracing renderer. It loads 3D models in many common formats, allows you to compose the scene and setup materials, and then renders resulting images using our state-of-the-art raytracing engine. Owlet provides a sophisticated materials system with support of multi-layer reflection, refraction, subsurface scattering, absorbtion, thin-film interference, image-based lighting and much more. At the other hand, Owlet comes with a growing library of 150+ ready-to-use materials and textures, so you don't have to start from scratch.
Despite the number of features, Owlet tries to be an easy tool for the end user. Like with our other applications we invest a lot of efforts to make sure your Owlet learning curve will not be steer and you can get up to the speed in a short time.
Standalone Application
Owlet is a standalone application, so it means it supports the 3D editing software you use, be it a free application, commercial software or even a custom-made one. Owlet loads standard 3D formats like OBJ, Collada, FBX, 3DS etc that your 3D editor is able to export. You can even change your 3D editor, but still rely on Owlet no matter what.
Advanced Rendering Engine
Owlet features a state of the art physically-based raytracing rendering engine. That means we simulate the light passing through the objects exactly as it happens in the real world. We apply the same principles, as the mother-nature, so the result you get is basically the same like if you see it with your own eyes.
Almighty Materials
Our complex multi-layered materials can do virtually anything you may need. Bump, advanced reflections, thin-film interference, refractions, absorption and subsurface scattering, anisotropy, file-based ior options, light emission, masks, groups - just pretty much everything you may need to make a perfect scene.
File Formats
Owlet loads OBJ, Collada, FBX, 3DS, STL, PLY and DXF 3D file formats. As for images, Owlet supports PNG, JPEG, TIFF, PSD and BMP formats with CMYK color profiles where available. Owlet also supports HDR and EXR high-definition range formats and AI and PDF files on Mac OS X.
Camera Settings
Owlet allows to to configure almost any apsect of the camera like if you have a real one. This includes the depth of field option with the control of the diaphragm size and the number of blades. Right click with alt/option key to focus on the clicked object.
Multi-layered Materials
Materials may have as many layers as you need, grouped with masks, so you can make a really complex material when needed. Owlet renders materials layer by layer exactly as your graphics editor works with the artwork. If light goes through the last layer, it refracts inside the medium.
Lighting
Owlet supports both image-based lighting and light-emissive materials. For simple scenes all you need is an HDR environment image, while for the complex scenes you can turn any geometry into a light source with color and intensity to perfectly control the rendered image.
Scene Editing
Owlet provides a scene tree displaying all the nodes and meshes. You can edit transformations using gizmo or by entering values, you can hide or show nodes, clone or delete them. Owlet can also generate normals and UV-mapping if a scene misses them.
Rendering Scenes
Owlet supports rendering to resolutions up to 8192x8192 pixels with a "Good Enough" button that you can press when you are happy with the image you see. At the other hand Owlet features a "Render More" button that asks it to do some extra rendering, if you need it.
Materials Library
Owlet comes with 150+ built-in materials, including plastics, paints, metals, papers, glasses, liquires, stones, woods and lights. It also features some useful textures for anisotropy, wood, stone, paper, background and environments. That's a good start, just add some yours to make it perfect!
Saved Cameras
Owlet allows you to save a nice camera position to the special list, so you can return to it later for editing or rendering. It's like an extra camera activated with a single click!
Whats New:
This update fixes some issues with project saving introduced in version 1.7. It also increases time-based rendering limit to 24 hours.
