She began by gospel singing but then recorded “Don’t Make Me Over” by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

‘Anyone Who Had a Heart’ and ‘Walk On By’, ‘Do You Know The Way To San Jose’, were her next hits.

Her next hit was in 1974 with ‘Then Came You’, then with a move to Arista Records and the record ‘Dionne’, and the 1982 collaboration with Barry Gibb (of the Bee Gees) to record ‘Heartbreaker’ in 1986.

This gathered her sixth Grammy Award.

In 2005 she was honored by Oprah Winfrey at her Legends Ball.
