本片对森林的和谐气氛与物们善良本性描写十分深入，故事里藉由可爱动物们温馨的扶持与相处，展现纯真童心及处处有爱的寓意，同时，也歌颂出了爱的力量。迪士尼的动画家特地赴野地实察，并用创新的“水彩概念画法”将整片森林的神韵表达得一览无遗，为了观察动物的一举一动，动画家们与动物相处了很长一段时间，再将动物配合人类的表情拟人呈现，成就了这部不朽的杰作！当本片一推出立刻开出亮丽的票房，影片中森林的一景一物、角色的一颦一笑马上掳获人心，让每个人都感动不已。当时许多小朋友甚至把〝小鹿〞和〝斑比〞划上等号。甚至迪士尼内部的人员都坦承，其实後来的动画『狮子王』也有一部分灵感也是出自『小鹿斑比』
